Tips for Reducing Depression

Regardless of what is causing you to feel depressed, there are some things that you can learn from these simple tips for reducing depression.

You really can make yourself feel better simply by doing 5 easy things.

  • The first of these tips for reducing depression is to stop spending time reading the newspaper or watching the news on television.  These things are published in such a way as to purposely dwell upon the negativity in life because that is what makes them sell.   This is why you are reading stories about war, rebellion, death, destruction, doom and despair.  These are things that are guaranteed to put negativity into your mind.  When you are feeling depressed, these are the last things that you need to be reading or hearing about as they will only cause you to feel even more depressed by nurturing your feelings of helplessness.
  • It is also important that you eliminate any self-talk for the same reasons as stated in the first of these tips for reducing depression.  What you want to do here though is be sure that you are only saying nice things about other people.  The old adage “if you can’t say anything nice, then don’t say anything at all” is still true today.  If you are having a conversation with someone who says something that is not nice about someone else, you can take a moment to turn things around by saying something positive about the person that you are talking about.  Setting yourself up to find something positive in your surroundings will make you better equipped to keep negativity away from you.  In turn, this will keep you from becoming depressed.
  • One of the most important tips for reducing depression is getting out of the house and doing something.  Physical exercise and sun are especially important if you are already depressed because studies have proven that these things will improve you health and your attitude.  So, you should try to get out of the house each day and go for a 20-minute walk.
  • Whenever something is going on around you that is making you feel anxious then one of the many tips for reducing depression is to take a deep breath and relax.  Regardless of what life may be throwing your way, this is sure to make you feel better.
  • Another one of the many tips for reducing depression has to do with watching what you eat.  While these foods may taste great, such things as caffeine and alcohol can truly cause you to have severe mood swings.  This is why you should try to avoid eating these things.  Other foods that you should also try not to eat too much of include sugar, fats and starch.  Some additives can also impact your mood and thus need to be avoided.  These include artificial sweeteners, artificial dyes and preservatives.
  • My final tip for reducing depression is drinking plenty of water.  Many people do not know that water has a very important role to play in combating depression and improving your mood.  Nevertheless, this is true and it is actually why doctors recommend that you should drink at least 40 ounces of water per day.  If you drink either soda or coffee, then doctors say that you need to increase the amount of water that you drink because caffeine is a diuretic that depletes water from your body.

Of course there are also other tips for reducing depression.  For instance there are herbs and vitamins that you can take to help fight depression once you have it, but please discuss this with your doctor before you take anything.
